Hiring an Editor: What I've found out the hard way
Never, never, never hire an editor without getting a sample of their work.
A very expensive lesson. I hired an editor without getting a sample of her work and she tried to tell me a born and bred TEXAN is more likely to be a vegetarian than to eat beef. A TEXAN!
Being a born and bred Texan myself, I know how wrong this is. My mother and I are both fairly certain my first “real” meal comprised some kind of beef. And umm, well, there’s the Texas Longhorns and Bevo.
The point of this being, always get a sample to make sure you and the editor you are going to work with are a good fit. They have to understand your vision for the story. After all, it’s your story.
